Simone Hasselfeldt (9th Grade)

"I have been learning/teaching myself how to program and build mechanical prosthetics, I have experience from going to STEM camps in Michigan (at Michigan technological university) and I also have coding and hardware design from taking classes around Southlake and up in Michigan."

"Coding classes, JWIE at MTU (admitted through recommendation and essay), 3D printing at MTU, art design at MTU, and Robotics at MTU have been my favorite programs for what I’d like to persue (bio-eng.) and I have a hope for the future that I will either be able to design equipment used in biology, or prosthetics, because overall those interest me the most as I can use my knowledge in hardware and software to make things that would benefit people."

We noticed high levels of anxiety in our classmates (especially as junior year started), and wanted to offer helpt through social media and in-person events as part of our HOSA mental health campaign. We run weekly campaigns on instagram spreading awareness about types of anxiety, as well as risk and protective factors. We also use the account to advertise our in person events such as bracelet making and snack stands. By creating this account, we hope to reduce the stigma surrounding anxiety and mental health in general. We learned a lot about different expressions of anxiety and how to manage symptoms, and we hope you will too!
